Corbett & Fikkert on Poverty Alleviation

“Reconciliation of relationships is the guiding compass for our [Christian] poverty alleviation efforts…. The goal is not to make the materially poor all over the world into middle-to-upper-class North Americans, a group characterized by high rates of divorce, sexual addiction, substance abuse, and mental illness. … The goal is to restore people to a full expression of humanness, to being what God created us all to be, people who glorify God….”
-Steve Corbett & Brian Fikkert, When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty without Hurting the Poor and Yourself

“…a group characterized by high rates of divorce, sexual addiction, substance abuse, and mental illness…”

–That is a very apt (and very sad) description of the middle to lower upper class. Thanks for posting this! He raises a good point.

Thanks for sharing this quote. I borrowed the book from the library and Mike and I are enjoying it very much.

    • “…borrowed the book from the library”…what a great idea! I bought this book, and it is sitting on my bookshelf patiently waiting its turn. Would love to hear from you and Mike about this book sometime…I’ll have to hurry and catch up!

  3. I have actually read this book now, and it was even more helpful and mind-shaping than I imagined it would be. I recommend this book very highly.
